BARTERING OUR LIVES FOR LUXURY BUNGALOWS

The proposed development and construction of at least 140 luxury bungalows on Bukit Gasing is on the fast-track, with soil testing beginning October 2006 by the developer – Sanctuary Gasing. It is believed that it is only a matter of time before the development order (DO) will be granted by DBKL, as early as January 2007.

On 23 Sept 2005, the Datuk Bandar of DBKL assured residents during a meeting with them that there would be no development on Bukit Gasing. A similar assurance was given to residents by Federal Territory officials at a meeting this year.

However, there has been no response from the Datuk Bandar of DBKL for more than a year and the developer has begun soil-testing. It appears there is a lack of concern for the lives and safety of residents living in the vicinity of Bukit Gasing.

Furthermore, Bukit Gasing is one of the last remaining green lungs of Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. The cost of losing this is immeasurable.

History speaks truth to greed – Highland Towers, Gombak, Bukit Antarabangsa, Ulu Kelang, Wangsa Maju. Any development of Bukit Gasing will result in a disaster of unparalleled proportions, just waiting to happen.

The alarm was further raised by none other than the Minister for Environment Dato’ Seri Azmi Khalid and supported by all state governments in Malaysia, after the latest devastating landslides in Wangsa Maju, in calling for zero development on hill slopes with 15 degrees or more gradient (source: The Sun, 6 Oct 2006, page 6).

We must not allow our LIVES to be exchanged for luxury bungalows. We cannot allow profits to come before PEOPLE and the ENVIRONMENT.

We must, and can stop this disaster if all of us come together as one community and with one voice, united against greed.

Please support our efforts. Your individual participation is CRUCIAL to convey our concerns to the authorities. Please attend and bring your friends and neighbours to the above activities.

Together, we can make a difference
