KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 5, 2012): Residents around Bukit Gasing, where a development project is currently ongoing, are living in fear of potential landslips occurring during the rainy season.

Bukit Gasing Joint Action Committee member Gary Yeoh called on Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to hold a public hearing for the residents and assure them that the Sanctuary Ridge Kuala Lumpur City is a safe project.

He said the residents’ fears are justified as attempts by developer Gasing Meridien Sdn Bhd to sculpture the steep hill to suit the construction of houses brought dire consequences to the neighbourhood.

“Almost 50% of the hill has slopes with a gradient of more than 25 degrees, making it impossible for development.

“If the developer continues to commence earthworks, it is equivalent to inviting disaster to the site,” he told theSun today after visiting the site upon receiving complaints from residents.

He said he had been informed that massive diggers were surrounding the housing area due to an alleged landslip that happened yesterday morning.

“The diggers were trying to clear the landslip and had the earth transported on lorries,” he claimed.

The residents have opposed the project over fears that it will result in a predicament similar to the Bukit Antarabangsa tragedy in 2008.

However, the Federal Court had on Oct 3 dismissed a leave application by residents to appeal against the Kuala Lumpur mayor and developer to stop the development order for the 15.52ha site in Bukit Gasing to build 69 bungalow lots. In response, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib told theSun he is not aware of the alleged landslip.

There are plans by DBKL to organise a site visit soon.

“We have been receiving complaints from residents. So, we will check to see if the developer follows requirements while conducting earthworks,” he said.

Asked if the earthworks will be stopped due to the landslip, he said he will have to discuss it with the developer.

He added that a team of DBKL officers will be sent there to check on the situation.
